Sylacauga 1954

Postby David Entwistle » Sun Nov 30, 2014 11:13 am

[corrected how long ago]...

One of the most notorious meteorite falls occurred about sixty years ago when a 5.56 kg stone fell through the roof of an Alabama house injuring Mrs Ann Elizabeth Hodges.

There is a contemporary report from the Tuscaloosa News (Wednesday, December 1st 1954) here. The report from Life Magazine (December 13th 1954) is available here. The article starts on page 25.

Does anyone have the Sky & Telescope edition, or any other contemporary report?

The Meteoritical Bulletin Database entry, for what became known as the Sylacauga meteorite, is available here. The preferred location for the fall is here.

Alabama Museum of Natural History have a very nice report here and there's more at the Encyclopaedia of Alabama.

Nope,no contemporary publications here and i don't have a piece either. There are quite a few crumbs floating around and turn up occasionally but i don't recall seeing many bigger pieces at all. Certainly a history making meteorite fall..............
