Chelyabinsk Regional Museum Anniversary

Postby David Entwistle » Fri Jul 03, 2015 9:05 am

Chelyabinsk Regional Museum celebrated its 70th anniversary, on the 1st July 2015, with an open day and a fragment of the Chelyabinsk Meteorite available to touch. The main mass remained under its protective cover. Report (in Russian) here.

There's another report here suggesting a replica of Chelyabinsk was on display, along with the Annama Meteorite. It isn't what the report says, but I'm guessing the replica was the Annama meteorite, rather than the Chelyabinsk.

Tomas Kohout, from the University of Helsinki, has very kindly clarified what has been scanned. Tomas reports that the Chelyabinsk main mass was scanned, with a laser scanner, in May of this year. So far no replicas have been printed, but they are planning to do so. That's going to be quite something.

Many thanks to Tomas for the clarification.

The Chelyabinsk Meteorite exhibit, at the Chelyabinsk Regional Museum, had a group of VIP visitors recently. As a result there are a number of pictures on the Governor's web site. There's one below. The meteorite looks to be holding up quite well.
