A not to miss event on Saturday October 3rd, Leicester Space Centre...probably the largest meteorite show staged so far by the society...spectacular meteorites of all descriptions..come along and hold pieces of the moon and mars and perhaps win your own meteorite in our competition....associated meteorite lecture now announced.

The Space Centre is a great day out anyway...

Excellent.

The Leicester Mercury provide a mention on their web site.

Next week, staff at the space centre will welcome visitors of all ages and hold events such as a time machine-building workshop for kids, and an exhibition of meteorites from the British and Irish Meteorite Society.

University of Leicester planetary scientist Dr John Bridges, who is part of the Nasa team analysing data beamed back from Mars by the Curiosity rover, will also be giving a talk on the science of meteorites.

Now also mentioned in the Loughborough Echo...

There will be more meteorites on display than in any other location in the UK on that day with some of the rarest examples ever displayed too.

How many occasions do people get the chance to hold something that was around before the Earth even formed or a piece of the moon in one hand and a piece of Mars in the other?

The largest meteorite to ever fall in the UK fell on Barwell in Leicestershire on Christmas Eve 1965. On display will be a Barwell specimen that fell through the roof of the factory on Dawsons Lane and was also recovered with help from staff at the National Space Centre, which makes it quite unique.

Graham Ensor and the British and Irish Meteorite Society will be joining in to celebrate this 50th anniversary of the Barwell meteor landing.

Thanks for spotting this David...should be a good day and has received some reasonable publicity so far...

I did give all members names who were doing the display to the organizers...sorry they just mentioned me by name.

There's another Barwell Celebration down at the NHM on the 4th November...only just found out about it...as part of a series of workshops...will post details separately in another topic.

Well, Graham, Kuther, Kieron and myself had a great day at the Space Centre and had hundreds of interested visitors come by our display of meteorites. Here are a few photos and will link to the rest when i've sorted through them and uploaded them:
