The BBC NEWS web site reports...

The earliest meteorite impact crater to be discovered anywhere in Britain or Ireland lies beneath a large area of Scotland, a scientist has suggested.

Dr Mike Simms, of Ulster Museum in Belfast, says has located the centre of the crater to be Lairg in Sutherland.

Patches of impact deposit, rock fragments thrown out when the meteorite hit, have been found elsewhere before.

Palaeobiologist Dr Tori Herridge follows up her documentary on the mega-flood that separated Britain from continental Europe with three more investigations, all of which explore some of the prehistoric forces that shaped the national landscape. She begins by visiting north-west Scotland, where the craggy coastline indicates an asteroid landed 1.2 billion years ago. Dr Mike Simms of Ulster Museum joins Tori as she searches for the impact crater, which would be the first of its kind discovered in mainland Britain.
