Differentiated Planetesimals & Parent Bodies of Meteorites

Postby msg-meteorites » Wed Nov 27, 2013 3:55 pm

Thanks to Martin from KarmaKa meteorites for posting this on Facebook. The link below is to a talk by Ben Weiss on meteorite parent bodies and giving his view that there is a continuous scale between differentiated and undifferentiated parent bodies with bodies that are partially melted and contain some melted differentiated portions but also contain unmelted chondritic material. It's really interesting and well worth a watch, it's an hour long but definitely worth persevering with :-) He explains how the theory of a singular parent body was postulated in the early 60s but was moved away from because of chemical work such as oxygen isotope signatures etc meaning multiple different parent body origins for meteorites. He then goes back to say how this theory could have some merit using magnetic studies and other observations in that there could be partially melted parent bodies that could produce both chondritic and a chondritic material. Well worth a watch :-)
