John C. McConnell makes a welcome return as contributor for this month's image, a 15.6g end-cut of everybodies favourite CV3 Allende. A Mexican meteorite that fell to Earth in February 1969, providing science with an ample quantity of fresh CV3 material for the first time. Talking of Allende, does anyone know why it is generally available only in small specimens of 1-3g, if you're lucky? I know that larger examples surface occasionally, but not very often. I have been looking out for a nice 20g specimen for ages. Were the stones from this fall on the small side to start with, or has it been sub-divided so much that only small fragments remain?

Regards, Kieron

Thanks Martin, yes it's one I got from JohnS in USA, all his specimens seem to be very fresh and clean, some wonderful items on his site as well. Pity I don't have one of those 1cm cubes to show the size but it's about 2" long, and a pie cut - very nice size with one side of crust.

Hi Kieron,

I think most of the Allende specimens are small because of the way the meteorite exploded on the way down, there was a great shower of material that fell over a vast area. I think in fact they are still finding material to this day. You will find on occasions whole stones in the region 20g you just need to be on the lookout. If I see something I'll let you know!
John.

Thanks for that, John. Yes, I would appreciate a heads-up if you see anything at around 20g.
