121103 - Image of the Month for November

Image
This months image has been kindly provided by Mike Simms. It's the first time our members image of the month has been an unclassified NWA stone, but this specimen is really worth a closer look. The 36g slice is likely from an L chondrite meteorite and has amazing shock veins running right across it. The L chondrite parent body suffered a catastrophic break-up event ~470 million years ago, that accounts for the many L chondrite meteorites on Earth. These shock veins give us an idea of the forces involved in this break-up. Click here to view the image in the Gallery or here for our archive of all previous "Image of the Month" images.

Again, I'm still relatively short of images for future months and would welcome submissions. Please send them via email, message me on the forums if you don't already have my email address. Thank you.
