About Meteorites - Stony-Irons
Stony-Iron meteorites consist of similar amounts of metal (iron-nickel) and stone minerals (silicates). This group is consists of the following types:
  • Pallasites - Formed at the boundaries of the metal core and silicate mantles of differentiated (See 'Achondrites' above) asteroids. A mixture of green/yellow olivine crystals and iron-nickel metal. Often considered to be among the most attractive of all meteorites. (Image shows a 5.8g etched part slice of Imilac, pallasite)
  • Imilac
  • Mesosiderites - Metal and silicates mixed and melted by large impacts early in the formation of the solar system, probably a mixture of many parent bodies. (Image shows the cut face of a ~7g fragment of NWA 4576, mesosiderite)
  • NWA 4576
